Ludwig Bemelmans

Ludwig Bemelmans was born in 1898 in a town now called Merano, Italy. He came to the United States in 1914, spending his first Christmas Eve in America on Ellis Island. Soon he was contributing illustrations to The New Yorker, Vogue, and other magazines, and in the 1930s he was “discovered” by the famous children’s book editor May Masee. Madeline was published in 1939, and its sequel, Madeline’s Rescue, followed thirteen year’s later, winning the Caldecott Medal. Throughout his career Bemelmans published an eclectic variety of charming books for both children and adults, including four more Madeline adventures and the acclaimed story collection Hotel Splendide. He died in 1962.
